The health equity framework establishes that all people should have equal opportunity to live a life of health. Unfortunately, the majority of the United States healthcare system structurally disadvantages certain people who may not have access to the resources, education, or mobility necessary to acquire quality care. As UCSB’s Health Equity Advocates, we aspire to increase access to healthcare for the most impacted student populations by providing direct student support and educational content.
What We Do
The Health Equity team works closely with Student Health, the RCSGD, and other campus departments to ensure that marginalized students, especially queer and trans students, receive accessible and equitable healthcare. We develop educational resources, conduct workshops, and offer one-on-one support meetings for students. We can assist with insurance navigation, finding a provider, behavioral health navigation, scheduling appointments, and assessing your options. Additionally, we help students navigate LGBTQ+ health, including gender-affirming care, gender-affirming products, and sexual healthcare.
Contact Us
UCSB’s Health Equity Advocate, Buster Buchanan (he/him), is available to help students access and navigate healthcare both on and off campus. If you are experiencing any difficulties or concerns in obtaining proper care, have questions about healthcare options, or want to suggest possible areas of action in the name of health equity, please reach out to Buster!
